First-Grade Teacher Surprised with Scholarship Announcement

December 5, 2018

Abigail Weitzel, a first-grade teacher at Fairview-Clifton German Language School, was going about her normal day of teaching when a few new faces — one of them an owl mascot named Sage — entered her classroom with Principal Monisha House.

The strangers were from Western Governors University (WGU) Ohio, and they were awarding her a $2,500 scholarship toward her master’s degree in education.

“Abigail Weitzel, we are proud to tell you that you are the most recent recipient of the $2,500 WGU Ohio Scholarship,” said Krista Spencer, strategic partnerships manager at WGU Ohio.

Spencer presented Weitzel with a check and shared a few words from Weitzel’s own scholarship application about why she wants to pursue her master’s degree, with a focus on technology, at WGU Ohio:

“I cannot put into words how rewarding it has been to teach in the classroom. I have gained more friendships, knowledge, decision-making and leadership skills than I ever thought was possible. I feel fulfilled. With the ever-changing world, I think it is crucial to be versed in technology and how to use it properly. I look forward to deepening my skills with technology and teaching with this advanced degree.”

“Congratulations, Frau* Weitzel,” her students cheered and applauded. “We are so proud of you!”

WGU Ohio was founded in June 2018 following a partnership between the state of Ohio and Western Governors University, an online, competency-based university established to expand access to higher education. WGU Ohio offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across business, education, information technology and health professions such as nursing.

Principal House shared that it’s always inspiring to see teachers pursue advanced degrees to perfect their craft of teaching.

“We want to instill in our students that they can be lifelong learners, and it’s great when our teachers emulate that,” House said. “Frau Weitzel is very engaged in technology. Other teachers come to her for new ideas in how they can incorporate technology. So, her pursuing her master’s with a focus on technology will be an asset for the entire learning community.”
