Prospective Parents

Magnet School Enrollment
Fairview German Language School will be moving to its new location at Clifton Avenue and McAlpin in the Fall of 2008.
Parents interested in enrolling their child at Fairview in Preschool, Kindergarten or 1st Grade are encouraged to visit the current school on Stratford to observe classes and talk to the faculty to see if Fairview is right for you and your child.

Because of the German language curriculum at Fairview, students are admitted into Kindergarten and 1st Grade levels only and beginning next year, full-day Preschool. However, prospective students with some knowledge and experience of German may be admitted at other grade levels upon approval. Call the main office at (513) 363-2100 with any questions regarding admission to Fairview.

Students who turn 5 between Oct. 1, 2008 and Dec. 31, 2008
Parents who wish to enroll their child as an underage kindergartner will be conditionally accepted using the same procedures as any open enrollment school-age child. The student needs to be screened by a CPS school psychologist and recommended for kindergarten placement prior to being placed on a class list. Students may only be screened one time. Arrangements for the screening can be made by calling the Fair-view office at 363-2100. Underage children who are not recommended to begin kindergarten will not be accepted. Open spots occurring will be given to the next child on the waiting list. If an underage child is on the waiting list and no recommended to enter kindergarten will be removed from the waiting list. Parents may reapply during the magnet enrollment cycle for the 2009-2010 school year.

For Parents Attending A Tour
Parents who attend a tour between October and February 11 may pick up and fill out an application ahead of time. Applications will not be accepted until February 11, 2008. The parent needs to take the application home and bring it back with copies of the additional documentation on Feb. 11. No applications will be taken and held ahead of time.

Fairview Philosophy
The purpose of the German language program at Fairview is to enrich each child's educational experience through intensive daily exposure (approximately 60 minutes of instruction per day) to the "German language and culture."  Ultimately, each child should:

  • Learn to understand, speak, read and write German
  • Develop an understanding for German speaking people and their way of life
  • Develop an appreciation for the contributions of German-Americans to American life
  • Develop positive multi-ethnic and multicultural attitudes, demonstrate improved learning skills and
  • Behave in a manner reflecting increased self discipline

Curriculum
German instruction at Fairview is provided within the framework of an intensive Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) program with emphasis on content enrichment. In addition to traditional foreign language instruction, topics in curriculum areas such as social studies, science and math are covered in the German classroom as well. There is an extensive, detailed German curriculum for each grade level. Authentic materials, German textbooks, and a variety of regalia are implemented on a regular basis to supplement the established curriculum at each grade level.
