| Events
Fairview has many special events throughout the year.
Some are fundraisers, some are educational events and some
are cultural events, but mostly they are all FUN events
for the kids and the Fairview families! Here are just a
few:
B.U.G.
Club
Many teachers offer BUG (Bring Up Grades) Club, an after
school tutoring session that meets once or twice a week.
Career
Day
Each year professionals present their careers to students
from Kindergarten to 6th grade in a wide array of professions
including science, sports, entertainment and more.
Fairview
Family Picnic
Each
year at the beginning of the school year, Fairview holds
picnic for Fairview families and students to meet and
get reacquainted.
Fasching
Fasching
is the pre-Lenten carnival season celebrated in German-
speaking countries, similar to Mardi Gras. The exact historical
origin of Fasching is not clear, but festivals of this type
were established in Cologne by 1234. The festivals became
a time when ordinary rules were overturned resulting in
noisy parades, costume balls, excessive behavior, satirical
plays, and speeches. At Fairview, we use this season of
“merrymaking” to provide a break from the harsh,
cold of winter, to experience a German tradition, and to
raise money for Fairview School. The Fasching celebration
usually takes place on a Saturday in March. The new building
assumes a carnival atmosphere as children, teachers, and
parents join in the fun. In the German tradition the children
make scary masks to frighten away winter and encourage the
arrival of spring. Rooms of the school are filled with games,
a Bid n’ Buy Auction, balloons, prizes, and delicious
German foods and sweets. For

German-American
Day Assembly
This event honors the contributions of German
immigrants and of their German language and literature to
North-American culture and commerce. This day is a special
celebration of the wonderful contribution made to our city,
state and country by persons of German heritage. There will
be special speakers, student presentations, Choir and Orchestra
performances and a celebration of ALL Fairview children
born outside the U.S. Read more from Herr Hamilton about
the assembly here.
German-American
Night
We celebrate our exchange program with the Realschule Donaueschingen.
The German visiting students typically give speeches and
provide some entertainment for the evening. We will have
a potluck dinner again as well.
Holiday
Gift Shop
Every year our parent group puts up the Gingerbread House
or Holiday Gift Shop. On viewing days, children are able
to visit the shop with their class and view the items for
sale. Then on their class's designated shopping day, the
students can purchase gifts for their friends and family.
The shop is also open during lunch, after school, and on
the evening of the holiday concert.
Lantern
Walk
Typically
held the first Sunday in November, the "Clifton Lantern
Walk" was started by a Clifton resident and German
native, a tradition she fondly remembers of her childhood
in Hamburg. With a strong German heritage in Cincinnati
and Fairview slated to relocate to a new building in Clifton
in fall 2007, it was only natural that Fairview get involved
in this traditional German event. Lantern Walks in the largely
Catholic southern part of Germany are associated with the
religious holiday, St. Martin's Day and in the more protestant
north, it is mostly just a way of bringing the community
together. Many Fairview students, parents and teachers participate
along with the Clifton neighborhood.
Math
and Science Night
Science Night and Math night are special, evening events
attended by students, as well as their siblings, parents
and friends. These programs are designed to encourage students
of all ages and parents to participate in a variety of hands-on
math and science activities.

Mother's
Day Flower Sale
Our
Mother's Day Flower Sale is held the Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday before Mother's Day. Parents can pre-order spring
flowers then pick them up at the school during the event.
Children also have the opportunity to purchase flowers and
surprise Mom with them. Oosterbrock Greenhouse supplies
the flowers and gives us a percentage of the total sale.
Funds earned from this event, go to pay for the upkeep and
maintenance of our green space.
Pumpkin
Patch
For
two days in late October, Fairview students can visit Fairview's
Pumpkin Patch. The "Patch" is open for shopping
throughout the school day. Items for sale include small
pumpkins, hand-painted pumpkins and lots of little treats
and trinkets.
Library
Benefit Used Book Sale
Gently-used children’s books are collected for Fairview’s
Used Book Sale to benefit the school's wonderful library.
All books are sold for only 25¢.
Spelling
Bee
Each year, classroom spell downs are held to determine the
finalists from each fourth, fifth, and sixth grade homeroom.
These finalists participate in front of an audience of their
parents and classmates to determine the school’s representative
for the Cincinnati Post sponsored championship.
Young
Author's Night
Children
in all grades participate in this program by writing and
illustrating their own books. Their creative efforts are
displayed in the gym on a special night at the end of the
school year for all to enjoy.
